I missed the point!!I was a little distracted when I saw this film, I must say, and completely missed the point; I thought the reveal at the end of the story was going to be him telling the little girl who her actual mum was (I assumed she didn't know who she was for real all along!!)
The story meanders along, you don't really warm to the characters, the little girl is ok, but a bit annoyingly precocious, but I think this is mainly due to the material she's given to work with, and it dragged too.
This film was totally wasted on me!!
This is how Rom-Com's Should BeFirstly, i'm a guy, and although i'm not aversed to the rom-com, i prefer the "blow things up" catagory. Nevertheless, my girlfriend and i got this and watched it on DVD last night and i have to say, WHAT A FANTASTIC FILM.
It's interesting, insightful, funny. I think i spent a lot of time on the edge of the sofa, interested to what happens next. No Spoiler here, but the end is how films should finish. I finished watching this film and instantly all i wanted to do was watch it again.
If you want a great film that you could probably watch a number of times and never get bored, BUY THIS FILM.
ohh and if you are a guy, the presence of Isla Fisher and Rachel Wiesz is never going to be a bad thing.
5 stars!!I went to see this film in the cinema and loved it so much that i was ready to buy it on DVD the day it came out. I, like most others am familiar with the rom-com genre, guy meets girl, complication ensues, guy makes romantic gesture and they live happily ever after. It's been done! This film completly reinvents the genre and is a million miles away from the likes of 27 Dresses or Sex and the City. You really are never sure what's comming next or whats going to happen, and even if you think you do, your probably wrong!
The cast is steller, brilliant performances from leads Ryan and Isla, as well as sharp and witty writing, the film pretty much ticks all the boxes. I would give it my full recomendation and if you havn't seen it yet i suggest you do so.
An original storyline makes this a rom-com that should appeal to everyoneWill Hayes, played by Ryan Reynolds, is about to get divorced. His daughter can't make sense of why her Mum and Dad are splitting up and asks him to explain how he met her Mum, right from the beginning. From this moment we are then taken back by Will to where his rollercoaster love life began, from his very first relationship, right up to the present. We see it all played out, with brief interludes from time to time back to the present when his daughter needs to question her Dad on any particularly bewildering moments.
The story is very honest and uncomplicated. Although billed as a romantic comedy, the writers have deliberately not made it a 'laugh out loud' type film, instead concentrating on good drama and injecting it with lots of subtle humour that works well. The film never goes down the route of over-the-top sickly sentimentality, but instead shows how real people can sometimes get things wrong and how easy it is to derail a promising relationship.
This is a very good romantic comedy that successfully combines a genuinely engaging storyline with plenty of good humour, a winning formula that should even win over the romantic comedy sceptics, check it out.
More "Standing on the shoulder of Giants" than "Definitely Maybe"Some two days after watching this romcom I am struggling to recall even the slightest detail. I remember child-actress Abigail Breslin being smug and annoying. I remember that I wondered why the makers bothered with the source material when this sort of thing has been done a million times before. And better. For what it's worth this a story about a guy who has regrets about relationships, with the story pushed along by him reminiscing at the behest of the aforementioned annoying little girl. Oh yes...I remember...the end is so sickly Walt Disney would have vomited...I have taken another star off for that. If you are a desperate and lonely romantic you may have time to watch this, everyone else should continue with their lives.
